Why a License to Carry ?

Although Constitutional Carry, or better yet permitless carry, is now in effect in Texas, do keep in mind that EVERY no gun sign posted is enforceable. Reasons for the license are....

1) Ease of travel across reciprocal state lines. 2) Most jobs allowing employee concealed carry still require a Texas LTC to carry within policy. 3) No NICS background checks on firearms purchases, as you've already been vetted through your LTC. 4) College students may carry concealed on most college campuses where not posted. 5) Picking up the kiddos through school drive-thru ? An LTC is null to the federal 1000' school zone. 6) You're an employee of a public school district ? You'll need your LTC to park in employee parking. 7) Not as limited as to where you can carry, as compared to permitless carry. Any "no guns sign" is enforceable to constitutional carry. 8) Secondary form of picture identification.9) Accidental carry in an airport's gun-free area will be excusable.

For the Texas LTC, the State of Texas requires 4-6 hours of classroom or online training(4 hour) and time at the range for the shooting practical.

* Both require a minimum passing score of 70% or better.

APPLYING FOR THE TEXAS LICENSE TO CARRY:

There are two steps to the application process, first (1) is take a training course (either in a classroom setting or online) and shooting proficiency, then (2) completing an application and submitting fingerprints. These are concurrent and you may do either one first.

 1.     Take the Training Course: Take the LTC training course either in a classroom (4-6 hours) or the 4-hour Texas State Certified ONLINE course. State law mandates 4 to 6 hours of class time, which includes a written examination. In addition, there is a shooting practical which requires 1-2 hours at the range. You MUST pass each with a score of 70% or better. The class and exam cover Texas gun laws that relate to weapons and to the use of deadly force,   nonviolent conflict resolution, handgun use and safety, and   proper storage practices. 

The shooting practical requires you to fire fifty rounds total, which includes 20 shots at three yards, 20 at seven yards, and 10 at fifteen yards.The minimum passing score is 175 (70%). A perfect score is 250. Please be aware that the LTC class is NOT a firearm instruction class, and prior firearm experience is be expected. A Basic Firearm class is encouraged, and also available.

*Optical enhancers such as laser or scopes, are not permitted by Texas DPS administrative code when qualifying for your LTC. You WILL be asked to remove them prior to shooting. Red Dots are now allowed for the LTC qualification.

*Please have ammo (at minimum 1 box of 50 count) available prior to scheduling your shooting proficiency. Please make sure the firearm you will be using is in good working condition and well lubed. Any "failure to fire" will be deemed as no points on your score. *Firearm rentals for any class are available by advance notice.

 Our in-person LTC class fee is $100. We do in-home classes for groups of 6 or more, and will do the shooting portion on one of our two scheduled monthly shoots, or one may schedule a private shoot.

 A cheaper option, and a favorite of many, is the ONLINE CLASS. The online class is $80 ($50, if purchasing the class outside the West Texas area, and plan on locating an instructor for the shooting portion). If simply requiring the shooting proficiency, the shoot fee is $50 and is payable by an emailed invoice. Contact us for further details.

Our offered Texas DPS Approved  ONLINE CLASS offers the luxury of taking the class at your pace, without having to sit straight through the 4 hour class. Once your online class is completed, you will receive an email regarding scheduling the shooting practical which will be either at Tejas Shooting Sports or at The Odessa Area Outdoor Gun Range (pending range schedule). We schedule shooting practicals two Saturdays a month. Dates can be found here.

*Private weeknight shoots are also available at an additional fee of $30.

2.  Completing the application and fingerprints. There are two ways to approach this part of the process, submit the ONLINE APPLICATION and hit the green "apply" button (Fees to DPS are due at time of application... $40+). Status can also be checked by hitting the "login" green button. Application status can also be checked through this link by the "log in" button.

Fingerprints ($10+) may then be scheduled through Identogo.com after completing the online application.

Unscheduled walk-in service is NOT available. To schedule an appointment at a time and location convenient to you, use one of the following methods:

*DPS allows up to 2 years to submit application/fee upon completing classroom or online training course. Once any one item is submitted to DPS, you've then one year to complete the process.
